Switch to Google Health
Switching takes about two minutes, it's free, and your walk progress stays exactly where it is.
Google Health is rolling out. While Google finishes reviewing our connection, it's open to early-access users. Want in now? Email us with the Google account you use in the Google Health app. Everyone else: we'll let you know as soon as it's open.
Fitbit is moving all partner apps to Google Health, and the old Fitbit connection stops syncing on October 30, 2026. Google Health (formerly Fitbit) is now a free input source in Walk The Distance.
Before you start
- Update Walk The Distance to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play.
- Make sure the Google Health app (formerly the Fitbit app) is installed and you can sign in to it. If you use a Fitbit watch or tracker, it should already be syncing there.
Switch in Walk The Distance
- Open Walk The Distance and go to Settings.
- Tap Connected Input Source.
- Tap Change Input Source and choose Google Health.
- Tap Connect Google Health and sign in with the same Google account you use in the Google Health app.
- Allow access to steps and distance when Google asks. Both are needed for your progress to update.
- You'll return to Walk The Distance with Google Health shown as your input source. Steps from the past 30 days are added automatically.
If you used Fitbit before
- You don't need to do anything in the Google Health app. If it lists Walk The Distance under Profile > Partner Apps with "Action needed", switching in our app takes care of it.
- Steps you walked before switching are already counted, and steps from the past 30 days are added when you connect, as long as your Fitbit kept syncing to the Google Health app.
- Google Health is free in Walk The Distance. If you subscribed only to sync your Fitbit, you can cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Keep your subscription if you're walking a premium route like the Continental Divide Trail.
If you used the pedometer before (Android)
You don't need a Fitbit. First turn on phone step tracking in the Google Health app: tap Connections, then Phone under Devices, then Agree. New to Google Health? Choose Just the app when it asks which tracker you're setting up. Stay signed in to the Google Health app, or it stops counting.
The pedometer still works, but Google Health counts steps more accurately and keeps updating in the background, even when the app is closed. Your progress carries over.
Trouble?
- I don't see Google Health in the list. Update the app to the latest version.
- My steps aren't updating. Open the Google Health app once so it syncs, then reopen Walk The Distance. Check that steps and distance were both allowed.
- Still stuck? Tap Contact Support in Settings and we'll help.
